Kumud Mitra

State President, West Bengal Fashion Council

I am Kumud Mitra. My interests have always been in all kinds of arts & crafts. After college I went to do some courses in textile designing and pottery making at Northern Illinois University, Chicago. I am dealing in textile products and garments designing since 1981. At about the same time I started my own manufacturing unit. My first show in Park Hotel Kolkata was a total sold out and since then I have not looked back. After that in 1995 I started exporting garments designed by myself to Europe. My biggest clients were in Paris. I participated many years in Igedo, Dusseldorf and Pret a Porter high fashion garments show in Paris. In my 39 years of journey in fashion designing and manufacturing, I have helped many upcoming designers to set their business and have helped many artisans in the field of printing, embroidery and stitching to set up their own workplace. I have encouraged women in villages to start a community workplace and helped them to set a working atmosphere in villages. I believe community benefits when a woman makes financial decision and the entire community gets lifted out of poverty. There is a desperate need to bring a sustainable employment back to our villages Through Rotary I have helped young girls to get trained as beauticians and helped them to start a steady income. It is time to empower women and help them to stand on their feet.
